Solar Water Heating Systems

Solar Water Heating Systems consist of tanks and solar collectors.

There are two types of Solar Water Heating Systems:

• active- have an electric pump to circulate water or liquid

• passive- no electric pump for liquid circulation

Active Solar Water Heating Systems

There are two types of Active Solar Water Heating Systems:

• Direct Circulation Systems - pump sends water through the collectors in the house

• Indirect Circulation Systems - pump sends hot water through the collectors and a heat exchanger

Passive Solar Water Heating Systems

Passive Solar Water Heating Systems are less effective than active solar thermal systems for heating water, but they are cheaper and last longer.

There are two types of Passive Solar Water Heating Systems

• Integral Collector-storage Passive Systems - for households with significant demand for hot water.

• Thermosyphon Systems - water passes through the system when warm water rises and cold water falls. The collector must be below the tank so that warm water enters the tank. These systems are more expensive than storage systems with integrated collector.
